Wisconsin summers happen in the blink of an eye. One minute we’re getting two feet of snow, the next we’re planting our gardens, and then a minute later we’re drinking pumpkin flavored drinks and digging out our winter gear. The thing to remember with fitness is consistency. Don’t forget, there are quick simple workouts you can do to maintain throughout the year.
When the warm weather hits, we want to spend every possible minute enjoying the sunshine. That’s why gyms tend to empty out this time of year. But it’s important to continue with your workout regimen and not lose any of the results you’ve worked so hard for all year. Bathing suit weather may be short lived, but you don’t want to LOOK like you’ve been drinking beer, eating brats, and sitting by the pool all summer, even if that’s what you’ve been doing.
Did you know that you can lose up to 80 percent of your fitness level in as few as two weeks if you’re new to exercise? That’s a lot of hard work right down the drain! It’s ok to take a week or maybe even two away from the gym. You probably won’t lose much strength or muscle mass. But once you start taking three (or more!) weeks off you can start to lose strength and muscle. Plus, you’ll get out of your routine which may be the hardest obstacle to overcome. Your body and mind need you to stay consistent!
But being consistent doesn’t mean your workout has to stay exactly the same. Changing things up once in awhile not only keeps your body focused, it also keeps you from getting bored and giving up. Regular exercise that is enjoyable and built into your daily routine will have lasting power. Consider getting your friends and family to join you in being physically active. You can motivate each other and have fun at the same time.

Take advantage of the longer days of summer. Begin your workouts earlier in the morning, or try doing them a little later at night. With the sun out for a longer period of time, your mind will be more receptive to working out both earlier and later. Whichever time you choose, creating consistency in your schedule will help you stick to your routine and ultimately achieve your fitness goals.
The important thing is to make exercise a priority all year long. Aside from maintaining and improving fitness, keeping active can help you prevent weight gain and feel much better all summer!
